General Medicine Hospitalist Service

Attending-Only Inpatient Medicine Service

Our attending-only services function similarly to community-based practice models. Faculty members are typically scheduled on a particular service for 7 days ON followed by 7 days OFF. In addition to a regular set of shifts assigned, faculty are expected to serve on a number of Back-up shifts.

The Attending-Only Services (AOS) is the largest of the clinical services offered by the Adult Hospitalist Care Program. The primary responsibility is to manage the clinical problems of the acutely ill requiring hospitalization. AOS is staffed 24/7 by our hospitalists.

Hospitalists staff a combination of day shifts (7AM-5PM), swing shifts (Noon-10PM), and night shifts (8PM-8AM) throughout the course of an academic year. There are currently four general medicine AOS services, of which two are also staffed by APPs 7 days a week. These services also have primary responsibility as the Triage Officer for all medicine patient admissions and transfers.

Resident Staffed Inpatient Medicine Service

Our resident-staffed services are modeled like traditional academic services in which the attending faculty member is supported by a team of residents and medical students. The teams work and learn together to provide the very best care to the patients assigned to their team. Faculty who provide this traditional academic service usually are appointed to the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. Faculty primarily assigned to these services are typically scheduled on service for two-week blocks. There are three resident-staffed services. These services are staffed 24/7 by resident physicians.

Surgical Co-management Service

The Surgical Co-Management Service functions as a consultive service for patients admitted to non-medicine services. The primary responsibility of the Surgical Co-management Service is to support continuing and on-going care of patients presenting with chronic or acute medical problems. There is in particular, a co-management model in place with routine, post-operative orthopedic surgery patients.

Additionally, this service functions as a teaching service as there is often medical students, and internal medicine residents rotating on the team. Faculty primarily assigned to these services are typically scheduled on service for two-week blocks.

Cardiovascular Medicine Hospitalist Service

The Cardiovascular (CV) Hospitalist Service is a service under the adult hospitalist program, staffed by APPs 7 days a week, and provide care for a variety of cardiology diagnoses such as:

  • Myocardial infarction
  • Acute coronary syndrome
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Unstable angina
  • Arrhythmias
  • Syncope
  • Heart blocks
  • Decompensated heart failure
  • CVICU step-down patients (post valvular repair, etc.)

Faculty members are typically scheduled on a particular service for 7 days ON followed by 7 days OFF. In addition to a regular set of shifts assigned, faculty are expected to serve on a number of Back-up shifts. Hospitalists staff a combination of day shifts (7AM-5PM), swing shifts (Noon-10PM), and night shifts (8PM-8AM) throughout the course of an academic year. In addition, the CV hospitalist serves as the Triage Officer for Cardiology after 6PM.

In addition to the above patient population cared for by the CV hospitalist, this service also works in collaboration with the advanced heart failure team to provide coverage for patients followed by the advanced heart failure team. This includes patients with complex heart failure, heart transplants, and pulmonary hypertension.

VA Inpatient Service

The Iowa City VA Health Care System serves 184,000 veterans in 50 counties in eastern Iowa, western Illinois, and northern Missouri. The VA operates in close affiliation with UIHC.

The teams work and learn together to provide the very best care to the patients assigned to their team. Faculty who provide this traditional academic service usually are appointed at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. Faculty primarily assigned to these services are typically scheduled ON service in half month blocks, rotating ON another service or OFF service.

The primary responsibility of the Inpatient Service is to manage the clinical problems of the acutely ill requiring hospitalization. The Service consists of three teams (Red, White and Blue); each are staffed by an attending, a senior resident, two interns, as well as medical and pharmacy students. The Red Team is staffed by either a cardiologist or pulmonologist, while the White Team is staffed by a Hospitalist. The Blue Team may be staffed by attendings from a variety of specialties including Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, or Nephrology. White Team attendings also provide consultation services to surgery and psychiatry patients.
