UI ECMO training course earns international endorsement; second in the US

Rheumatologist Aleksander Lenert, MD, MS, FRCPC, recently received a five-year, mentored, and patient-oriented K23 research career development award in the amount of $837,000 from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) entitled, “Investigating Disease Activity, Bone Damage and Interleukin-1 Genes in Adult SAPHO Syndrome and Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis.”

Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine, Aaron Scherer, PhD, is the primary investigator (PI) for a large, cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct surveys on immunization-related issues with health care professionals and the general public.

Santosh Kumar, PhD, assistant professor in Cardiovascular Medicine, was awarded a two-year, $110,000 pilot grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) to research endothelial function in relation to the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene.

Keeli Frerichs was a star soccer player and avid exerciser until a heart condition sidelined her. The path back to an active lifestyle brought the St. Ambrose student to UI Health Care, home to one of the few experts in the nation who perform a new procedure to treat the condition.
