Welcome to the Renal Genetics Fellowship, a comprehensive, advanced, outpatient-based 12-month program designed to develop the first generation of fellowship trained genetic nephrologists. The University of Iowa has established a customized training and educational program in renal genetics for adult or pediatric nephrology trained fellows. The training program leverages several resources already available at the University of Iowa including the expertise within the adult and pediatric Nephrology Divisions, the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics, the HLA  laboratory, the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics and the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL).

The program consists of approximately 75% time in a variety of genetics focused ambulatory care clinics with 25% time for scholarly activities, ensuring a balanced and immersive clinical experience. Fellows will develop proficiency in evaluating and managing patients with suspected or known genetic disease in general nephrology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric urology focusing on congenital disorders of kidney and urinary tract development, kidney stone disease, genetic disease in kidney transplant candidates and in the genetic evaluation of living donor candidates. Training will include development of competencies in genome organization, genetic variation, variant interpretation, deep phenotyping and a thorough understanding of the breadth of genetic testing methods and trainees will develop the skills to analyze, re-interpret and reclassify genetic variants and become proficient in genotype guided therapies. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to gain research experience in clinical or translational fields within the Renal Genetics Program, further enhancing their expertise in this specialized field.
