Program Goals
The goal of the Interventional Cardiology Training Program is to train the fellow to independently perform catheter-based cardiovascular and peripheral interventions involving various devices and modalities at a level of proficiency to provide the highest quality of interventional care. The trainee will be expected to acquire both the cognitive knowledge base and the technical skills for multiple interventional devices in addition to mastering the knowledge base involved in patient selection, pre and post-procedure care, recognition and management of complications, and the scientific basis of advances within the field.

Common curriculum for fellows in a divisions of the Department.
Clinical Experiences
- Fellows perform coronary procedures at both the University of Iowa MCU cath lab and the Iowa City VAMC cath lab
- Both labs are staffed by University of Iowa attending interventional cardiologists and VAMC is just across the street from the MCU campus
- Fellows attend a weekly outpatient clinic with one of our interventional or structural heart faculty to enable exposure to complex patients
- Clinics will rotate halfway through the year to allow you the chance to work with multiple faculty
- Fellows share call duty and will take approximately half of the calls each
- STEMI program includes ECPR program
- Coverage arranged for vacations, conferences, medical leave, family leave
