Conferences
The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship offers a comprehensive educational curriculum that combines formal didactic instruction with daily procedural teaching. Conferences are designed to reinforce core electrophysiology principles, review contemporary literature, and prepare fellows for independent practice and board certification. In addition to the conferences listed below, education occurs continuously in the electrophysiology laboratory through real-time case discussions, electrogram interpretation, and one-on-one faculty mentorship.

Monday
Cardiology Grand Rounds
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Nationally recognized invited speakers and University of Iowa faculty present contemporary topics in cardiovascular medicine, research, innovation, and clinical practice. Fellows also have opportunities to present their own scholarly work.
Tuesday
Advanced Electrophysiology Conference
7:00 am – 8:00 am
A faculty-led conference dedicated to advanced electrophysiology concepts, including complex ablation strategies, intracardiac electrogram interpretation, three-dimensional mapping, device management, lead extraction, and review of challenging clinical cases.
Thursday
Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Department of Internal Medicine faculty and invited national speakers present multidisciplinary topics spanning internal medicine, quality improvement, patient safety, ethics, genetics, and emerging therapies.
Friday
Electrophysiology Case Conference
7:00 am – 8:00 am
Faculty and fellows review recent electrophysiology cases, intracardiac recordings, electroanatomic maps, procedural planning, and management decisions. These interactive conferences emphasize clinical reasoning, troubleshooting, and discussion of procedural complications.
Other Didactics
Longitudinal Electrophysiology Curriculum
In addition to the weekly conference schedule, fellows participate in one to two dedicated electrophysiology didactic sessions each month, consisting of 2–3 hour protected educational blocks. These conferences follow a structured curriculum covering the breadth of clinical cardiac electrophysiology, including basic electrophysiology, supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, cardiac implantable electronic devices, lead extraction, inherited arrhythmia syndromes, imaging, mapping technologies, and board-focused topics. The curriculum is designed to ensure comprehensive exposure to all major content areas over the course of fellowship while complementing the fellows' procedural experience.
Monthly EP Journal Club
A highlight of the educational curriculum is our monthly off-site EP Journal Club, an industry-supported event hosted at local restaurants and conference venues. These sessions bring together electrophysiology faculty, fellows, cardiovascular disease fellows, residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, nurses, and industry partners in an interactive learning environment. Each month, an EP faculty member moderates a themed discussion while three trainees critically appraise landmarks and contemporary publications relevant to clinical electrophysiology. The relaxed setting promotes lively discussion, mentorship, networking, and collaboration while reinforcing principles of evidence-based practice.
Board Review and Independent Learning
Throughout fellowship, fellows participate in board-focused educational activities, journal clubs, and self-directed learning. The combination of structured conferences, dedicated didactics, and daily faculty mentorship provides comprehensive preparation for the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Board Certification Examination.
