The continuity clinic experience is a cornerstone of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship and provides fellows with the opportunity to develop the clinical skills necessary to independently manage patients with cardiac rhythm disorders in the outpatient setting. Fellows establish long-term relationships with their patients, gaining experience in the evaluation, treatment, and longitudinal management of both common and complex electrophysiology conditions.

Fellows participate in a half-day continuity clinic each week throughout both years of fellowship, rotating between University of Iowa Health Care and the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Working alongside dedicated electrophysiology faculty, fellows evaluate new consultations and follow established patients while progressively assuming greater responsibility for clinical decision-making.

The clinic provides comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of electrophysiology. Fellows perform the initial evaluation, formulate diagnostic and treatment plans, review device interrogations and ambulatory monitoring, and discuss management strategies directly with faculty. Particular emphasis is placed on patient selection for catheter ablation, optimization of antiarrhythmic therapy, shared decision-making, and longitudinal follow-up after ablation and device implantation.

The continuity clinic also provides valuable experience in post-procedural care, including management of patients following catheter ablation, device implantation, lead extraction, and left atrial appendage occlusion. Fellows become proficient in recognizing procedural outcomes, managing complications, adjusting medical therapy, and coordinating long-term follow-up, preparing them for independent outpatient electrophysiology practice.
